The future of Hobart’s century-old shed has been revealed and it will start a new life with new details after it is moved from the Macquarie Point Stadium. The building, built on the railway line for Hobart in 1915, was placed on the heritage register earlier this year. It will be demolished and relocated in a move that designers announced in 2019.

Cumulus Studio director Peter Walker said the building would be given “new life” as a vibrant community hub hosting events, businesses and live performances. The mobile depot will have a unique blend of design and modernity, and will serve as both a unique and inviting connecting addition to the stadium on the day of the event,” Walker said. The site and stadium have been designed to retain its structure, history and connection to the site, while still allowing it to be used as an event space.
The design, which references the old railway station, will “control that connection” by connecting the two. The building will be located near the site where the train once stood.
As part of our design, we are delighted to restore the product and ensure it continues to operate at Mac Point. The church’s legacy has been used by some this year to call on the state government to abandon the stadium project altogether. Many people in and around Hobart go to the Stock Exchange, which is now a well-protected heritage site,” MLC Cassy O’Connor said in April.
This is very important – it is very important that it is in place, it is monitored and Jeremy Rockliff will not leave the stadium.
