Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has accepted the resignation of Michael Ferguson as Infrastructure Minister, following a series of setbacks in the rollout of the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
In a statement released on Monday, Ferguson expressed his deep disappointment over the delays in upgrading the port infrastructure at Devonport. He apologized to Tasmanians, acknowledging the project's failure to stay on schedule despite his team’s efforts.

Ferguson suggested Premier Rockliff consider a cabinet reshuffle, a recommendation that Rockliff has accepted. As a result, Rockliff will assume the infrastructure portfolio, while Ferguson will continue in his roles as Deputy Premier and Treasurer.
Earlier, Senator Jacqui Lambie had called for Ferguson's resignation on August 15, surprising her own Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN) colleagues. Lambie criticized Ferguson's handling of the project and argued that his position as Treasurer was untenable. She recommended that Ferguson step down from the Treasurer role and move to the backbench to allow for a more competent replacement.
The issues surrounding the Spirit of Tasmania vessels have included significant delays and cost overruns related to the Devonport port upgrades. The situation has led to proposed interim measures at another berth, raising concerns about potential collisions between Spirit and SeaRoad ships.
The rollout has also impacted Tasmania’s largest shipping company, SeaRoad, which anticipates substantial disruption to its operations. The cost overruns, including an additional 50 million euros paid to Finnish shipbuilder RMC, were only revealed after Labor questioned the government.
Amid these challenges, Premier Rockliff acknowledged Ferguson's contributions and expressed appreciation for his decision to step down from the infrastructure role, aiming to reduce distractions related to the port infrastructure issues.
