Tasmanians are soon to benefit from a new online tracking system that will provide real-time updates on the status of the state’s buses and ferries, set to be rolled out across the public transport network starting December, after years of anticipation.
Transport Minister Eric Abetz emphasized the significant improvement in customer experience with this long-awaited system, currently available in all other capital cities except Hobart. He highlighted its potential to inform passengers about delays due to traffic congestion or mechanical issues.

"The new system will offer certainty and reliability, crucial factors for all public transport users," Abetz stated. Initially launching with Hobart’s Metro services, the rollout will progressively expand to cover more areas, although school buses will not be included.
While unable to specify an exact completion timeframe, Abetz assured that efforts would be made to implement the system promptly. Metro CEO Katie Cooper echoed this sentiment, predicting a rollout across their bus fleet within a few months rather than years.

"We’re enthusiastic about supporting this initiative, which we believe will significantly enhance the travel experience for our customers," Cooper said. Passengers will have the convenience of tracking their buses through Google Maps or the Metro app.
In addition to real-time tracking, Metro is preparing to introduce mobile phone and credit/debit card payment options, aligning with broader efforts to modernize Tasmania’s public transport infrastructure. The state government initially committed to exploring live bus tracking options back in 2020, underscoring the long-term planning involved in bringing these advancements to fruition.
