Rishi Sunak has informally resigned today after a stunning election defeat to Labour, losing over 251+ seats in the House of Commons as of reporting. This comes at a time of great uncertainty and soul searching for the Conservative party, with the tories on track of undergoing a historic election defeat, breaking the previous record held in 1906 under Auther Balfour.

The Prime Minister had officially stepped down from his role earlier today, and has unofficially resigned as party leader, although not immediately "until formal arrangements are made" (Rishi Sunak, 2024). During his resignation speech he formally apologized to the nation for not hearing out the concerns and issues of the people to the degree that they would like, although believing that he had given his all during his time in office. Rishi stated the the public have sent a clear message through the ballot today, and that the public has demanded a change in government.
Although unclear, the Conservative party is set to be the official opposition in the UK, securing only 121 seats against a landslide majority Labour Government. although opposition will be strongly competitive, with the Liberal-Democrats securing 74+ seats followed distantly by the regional/fringe parties.
In a conciliatory tone, contrasting the often heated campaign, Sunak praised Starmer as “a decent, public-spirited man, whom I respect.”
“He and his family need our understanding as they transition to life behind this door and as he takes on this demanding job in an increasingly unstable world,” Sunak said. “In this job, his successes will become all of our successes, and I wish him and his family well.”

Following an extraordinary night for Labour, Starmer, who had earlier declared that “change begins now” to a crowd of supporters, is set to visit Buckingham Palace to be officially appointed by King Charles III. He will then move into 10 Downing Street, appoint a cabinet, and commence his work in government.
Despite a modest vote share, it was an outstanding night for Labour and some of the smaller parties. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK significantly impacted the Conservative vote, securing 4 million votes although winning only a few seats.
